Education and Training LRC and LacCore provide lab- and field-based, hands-on training and assistance in lake sediment collection and analysis. Our educational activities are focused around the central goal of increasing the use of (and improving access to) both high-tech and low-tech core analysis techniques. LacCore Visiting Grad Student Program
We are offering a new series of occasional short courses in initial core description (ICD), held at the LacCore Facility. This one-day workshop will introduce researchers to the techniques of multi-sensor core logging, high-resolution digital imaging, macro- and microscopic lithological description, basic image analysis, and sediment core curation. The only cost for this course is a nominal charge ($25) for supplies and lunch. The short course will be held on the following date:
Tuesday, May 13, 2008 (day before free sediment fingerprinting short course at UM-Minneapolis)
sample ICD short course agenda Please contact Amy Myrbo to register, for more information, or to be notified when further instances of this offering are scheduled. We anticipate holding additional instances of the short course in summer and fall 2008. In-person training is always available to researchers visiting the Facility to conduct ICD on their own cores. Instrument time and staff support are free of charge. Contact curator Anders Noren or lab manager Amy Myrbo to schedule your visit or for more information. The LacCore facilities page describes typical visitor activities. We develop and maintain a series of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for lake sediment analysis, which can be found here. We are developing these protocols into a Virtual ICD Short Course. LacCore staff teach a workshop course for University of Minnesota undergraduate students. In this one-credit course we take a transect of cores from a local lake and work on a class-defined problem such as comparing historical documents to the sedimentary record of human impacts on the lake.
